The Stephanie Walter Ocular Melanoma Foundation was created to help spread awareness of ocular melanoma. We also help finance travel expenses while someone is traveling for treatments (surgery/radiation/chemotherapy). The foundation also helps finance some of the costs for a prosthetic eye if needed.
Due to the rarity of ocular melanoma, there are few doctors who specialize in treating it. Because of this, some patients have to travel to see their doctor for surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. Chemotherapy alone can be administered every 4 weeks and if you are having to travel long distances for treatment, the costs can add up quickly. The Stephanie Walter Ocular Melanoma Foundation can help with travel expenses for treatments such as hotels, Airbnb, airfare, etc.
Some patients that have ocular melanoma have lost their eye due to the surgery to remove the cancer. The Stephanie Walter Ocular Melanoma Foundation helps by covering all or some of the costs affiliated with getting a custom prosthetic eye.
Eye cancer can refer to any cancer that starts in the eye. Cancer starts when cells begin to grow out of control.
The most common type of eye cancer is melanoma. But there are other types of cancer that affect different kinds of cells in the eye.
